Creating a Web Template in Photoshop
After creating the photoshop logo Create a Web Template in Photoshop. This course follows the course Creating a Bootstrap Template from PSD, where you work with an already prepared template in PSD format.
The template looks like this in the final.
In this course, we will look at how such a web template is created. To do this, we will use the paid program Adobe Photoshop, which is one of the world’s most widely used graphics programs for graphic works.
Unfortunately, as already mentioned, Photoshop is paid and the price is really high for occasional use.
In addition, the payment is made monthly, so it is a big strain on finances and it is necessary to think about whether it is worth investing in it, or calculate whether this investment will return to us in the future.
If we can’t or don’t want to buy Photoshop, you can also use an alternative in the form of Gimp, which is free for commercial use.
Its control is different and many functions are different, so we will not deal with it here at all.
But now let’s take a look at how to create a web template in Photoshop.
Working Environment
We will first look at how to customize the Photoshop environment. It may seem strange that I’m starting to prepare the environment when I said we’re going to look at creating a web template.
This is because it is a good habit to customize the environment for each type of work (web template, book cover, logo…). These are small changes, but they can make our work easier.
We can start by changing the color (theme) of the environment in which we work.
Open Photoshop, where we right-click on a free space outside the desktop and select the color that suits us.
Personally, I prefer the dark gray color, because it does not hurt the eyes so much, and especially at night, you will appreciate the darker color of the environment.
New document
Next, we will create a new document with its own dimensions and resolution.
The abbreviation for invoking this menu is Ctrl+ N/ Cmd+ N(after the slash there will always be an abbreviation for Apple devices) and we will fill in the document name sablona_web_prijmeni(_verze).
If necessary sablona_web_prijmeni_yyyymmdd(_verze). It is good to choose some naming convention that we will follow.
It is then much more convenient to orientate in this, which will be appreciated especially in a larger volume of work, or if we make more copies as backups.
It is also recommended not to use accents in the name, as some programs with accents still cannot work fully, and during some activities, the name may change to meaningless characters. This can then cause further problems.
After renaming, we move to the dimensions. Here we change the value for pixels for the width and fill in the field width and height 1479 and 2682.
These dimensions are taken from a ready-made template. The width is taken as a guide and only so that visually the whole fits together.
This is because most pages adjust their width according to the device on which the page is displayed.
Height is then determined either by agreement with the customer or simply by all images and objects being displayed as we wish.
In this case, we do not need a high resolution (it would only take us unnecessarily when saving), so 300we will overwrite the 72dpi to dpi.
Because we will be working with a web template, we will be working with the RGB color spectrum .
We will also check that in the main menu in the WINDOWS => WORK AREA section, we all have the DEFAULT option checked.
Keyboard Shortcuts
In the next step, we will set up keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop to save time later. For the purposes of this template, we will set only three shortcuts – go back one step / forward , go back several steps, and convert to smart objects.
These shortcuts are either already preset, but I personally do not think they are logically set, or we will set them again. Again, it depends on what suits whom, so you can safely skip this step.
During the course, I will always tell you other options to achieve this step without an abbreviation.
To change the keyboard shortcuts, find the EDIT section in the top left of the main menu, and the fourth from the bottom is the KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS AND MENUS subsection.
You can use the Alt+ Shift+ Ctrl+ K/ Alt+ Shift+ Cmd+ keyboard shortcuts to bring up this menu K.
Here we first swap the keyboard shortcuts for Go back one step back / forward and Go back more steps.
To change these abbreviations, click on EDIT and overwrite the BACK / AGAIN abbreviation from the existing abbreviation Ctrl+ Z/ Cmd+ Z to Ctrl+ Shift+ Z/ Cmd+ Shift+ Z.
I probably understand why it’s set up this way (possibility of comparison before and after adjustment), but personally, it bothers me more than that it would somehow make my work easier.
Thus, we will rewrite the abbreviation STEP BACK to Ctrl+ Z/ Cmd+ Z.
Another, and for us the last shortcut that we set, is the conversion to intelligent objects.
Click on the LAYER menu and at the bottom of the menu you will find the option INTELLIGENT OBJECTS and immediately below it TRANSFER TO INTELLIGENT OBJECT.
Rough template design
When designing a template for a website (but also for other creations), I always recommend taking paper and a pencil first.
For some, perhaps an archaic approach, but from my experience, we are much more creative on paper.
We are not pressed by the limitations of our experience with graphics programs and we can think about it much more. Also, it’s generally much faster for a rough idea.
I always write on one side of the block what it is necessary to have on the website.
What I want the website to say about itself, what emotions it should arouse in a person and what the customer expects, or questions and problems that come to mind when designing and which further consultation is needed.
On the other hand, I create the rough design of the page itself.
I also choose the color scheme of the website. If you are not exactly friends with the color typology, it does not matter at all, just follow a few rules:
- The first rule: there is beauty in simplicity
- And the second rule: if I don’t know what to do, there are plenty of sites to help you choose a color scheme.
- Personally, I prefer the amazing site color schemed-signer. Here you just choose whether you want to achieve a color complement (complementary colors), monochrome (shades of one color) color, or another color, you choose a color and the page itself displays the most suitable options.
Bootstrap Template from PSD
The first designs will take some time to figure out which colors to choose and how to arrange them correctly. After a while, you will figure it out and the creation will be much easier.
If we have everything written and chosen, we will jump to a rough layout design.
As I mentioned, for me personally, it is best and fastest to make this design by hand on paper.
However, if you want to use a design program directly, you can use, for example, the web editor draw , which was already mentioned in the course Creating a Bootstrap photoshop logo templates from PSD.
I prefer to “sketch” such a scheme of the website and its color in the program for better readability.
For example, a rough web page design might look like this. It’s fast and you can clearly see what will be where and how it will work.
